More Info

Nouri Iskandar was an Assyrian Syrian composer, musician and musicologist known for his Assyrian/Syriac church music and folk music compositions. He was born in Deir ez-Zor, Syria in 1938 to a family from Urfa (historically Edessa, now in Turkey), and passed away in 2023 in Sweden. Iskandar began his musical journey with the Syriac Orthodox Scout Band in Aleppo as a trumpet player. He studied violin for one year before founding the Syriac Choir in Aleppo in 1965, then establishing the Shamiram Ensemble in Beirut in 1970. In 1974, he performed at the first modern festival of Assyrian music in Beirut, a UNESCO presented concert, where he performed a number of songs alongside Lebanese artist Wadih El Safi.
