A cassette recording of a concert in the Damascus rural town of Tal Mnin by the Syrian singer Mohammad Sadek Hadid, known as the 'Poet of Attaba', accompanied by the oud instrument. Mohammad Sadeq Hadid was born in 1938 in Barri Sharqi – a village located east of Hama. He learned music and singing from his father Sadek Hadid, and in the early 1960s, began what would become a long and successful musical career - first on a regional level, then achieving widespread popularity in several areas of Syria. In the old Syrian countryside, people did not used to describe their local singers as singers, preferring the title ‘poet’ instead, such as ‘poet of the Rababa’ Therefore, Abu Sadek could often be heard expressing his passion for poetry and his deep respect for language. In 1968, he made a notable appearance on Radio Damascus's program Voice of the Farmers, performing a selection of attaba and Mouliya songs. The cassette market knew more than a thousand hours of his recordings, which were sung in the dialect of the Salamiyah region as well as the Bedouin dialect prevalent in his region, which is situated on the desert’s edge. His unique style earned him the moniker Attaba Salamoniah, which arose from his ability to elevate this folk tradition into a recognized school of singing. Abu Sadek passed away in 2007.
