More Info

The artist Mustafa Nasri was born in the Salheiya neighborhood of Damascus in 1941. His father, the artist Hatim Nasri, was a monologue singer who presented works opposing the French Mandate. Mustafa married Aziza Al-Halabi, and they were blessed with five children, including Asala Nasri, who pursued a career in the arts. Mustafa's career began in musical clubs, where he learned the art of singing. He then worked as a chorus member with the Umayya Folk Arts Troupe in 1960. In 1962, he began working with the Damascus Radio Choir, and began recording and performing solo in 1967. In the 1970s and 1980s, he recorded many songs, some of which were included on this cassette. His first original song, Atshan Ya Sabaya was composed by the talented artist Shaker Brikhan. Nasri's subsequent work was heavily inspired by Syrian traditional heritage, reflected in the lyrics, melodies, and vocal styles of his songs. A distinctive character of his music was its simplicity, as exemplified in the songs Ashoughak Bel Dahab and Ya Khali, both written by composer Hossam Tahseen Bek. Other notable songs include Tawwalu Hebabi, Helwa Wa Hentaweiyah, and Sahrawi Sahrawi, which were composed by artists such as Ibrahim Jowdat, Nimar Karkhi, Abd al-Fattah Sukkar, Suhail Arafa, Amin al-Khayyat, Salim Sarwa, and Zuhair Issaoui.
