More Info

A home-recorded cassette featuring singer Ali Hasan Al-Katreeb performing Attaba in his city of Salamiyah, Syria – located 33 kilometers southeast of Hama. Attaba is a traditional singing art form that was popularized mainly in the countryside and valleys of the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Palestine), and in part of Iraq bordering the Levant. Attaba is best known for its accompaniment with the Rababa instrument in Syria. Attaba is an artistic term that specifically refers to a lyrical passage sung by a single individual, a passage composed of four stanzas, the first three of which share the same rhyme structure, while the fourth breaks away from the this pattern and stands on its own. The cassette is part of a collection curated by Ghassan Qaddour, a dedicated historical researcher who has devoted his efforts to collecting, documenting, and preserving the rich tangible and intangible folklore of the Hama governorate.
