More Info

This cassette, compiled in Damascus by Mohammed Al Masri (Bulbul Al-Sharq), features a selection of songs by the iconic Syrian singer Asmahan. Asmahan, born Amal Al Atarache, was the sister of renowned musician and composer Farid Al Atarache, who introduced her to the world of music and helped launch her career as a brilliant singing star. Her extraordinary vocal talent was recognized early on, as she performed works by prominent composers such as Mohamed El Qasabgi, Zakariya Ahmad, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, and her brother Farid. In 1941, she starred alongside Farid in her first film, Intisar Al-Shabab (The Triumph of Youth), marking her entry into Egyptian cinema. Asmahan quickly rose to fame with her passionate voice—powerful yet agile—and became one of the first Arab singers to blend classical Western vocal techniques with traditional Oriental singing styles. She died in Egypt in 1944 under mysterious circumstances that remain unresolved to this day.
