More Info
This live tape documents a concert performed by Kurdish singer Mahmoud Abu Samra in the early 2000s, in which he performs with his warm voice a collection of songs and dabke that likely belong to the Afrin heritage that Abu Samra specialized in throughout his career, accompanied by a rich traditional multi-instrument arrangement that doesn't rely solely on keyboards. The tape is also distinguished by containing a mix of Kurdish and Arabic songs, such as Dalli Dalaouna which appears on the first side of the tape. Mahmoud Abu Samra hails from the village of Dumbelli in the town of Afrin in rural Aleppo, and is considered one of its most prominent contemporary singers. He began his artistic life at the age of fifteen, influenced by Afrin's great singers such as Ali Tajo and Jamil Horo, and has since released many albums, as well as performed at numerous concerts in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, in both Kurdish and Arabic languages, focusing in his work on reviving and preserving Kurdish Afrin heritage.
