More Info

This live tape documents a concert by Hama-born singer Issa Naous from the late 1990s, during which he performs with his warm and steadfast voice a collection of his own songs, written for him by poet Talib Shahhoud who collaborated with him on many occasions throughout his career. In the tape, we listen to the shy yet clear presence of the keyboards which was in the process of transforming into a main musical instrument in Syrian shaabi music. Issa Naous hails from the town of Deir Shamil in western rural Hama. He began his career performing Mawwals and Ataba with a warm, sweet voice at private parties and weddings, before recording and releasing his own songs and albums, including La Tenghashi Ya Flaneh which became a cornerstone of Syrian folk archive and attracted millions of listens online, helping Issa achieve considerable fame that made him sought after to perform at music festivals in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq.
