More Info
A cassette of Assyrian songs influenced by the Mardelli music of Syria’s Jazeera region, performed by Hassake-based singer Sargon Younan. The tape carries a traditional character, with acoustic rhythms, a slow tempo, and string-based arrangements free of electronics. A native of Tal Tamer in rural Hassake, Sargon Younan is considered one of the key figures in Assyrian music in Syria during the 1970s and 1980s. He worked across singing, production, arrangement, and sound engineering, and for a time ran his own recording company. He fled Syria following ISIS attacks on Christian villages in the Euphrates region, spending seven years in exile in Germany. After the group’s retreat, he returned to his homeland, where he resumed his role in reviving religious events and community celebrations in Hassake.
