More Info

This live tape documents a wedding celebration performed by Hamawi singer Mohammad Salmo, accompanied as usual by oud and percussion in an acoustic arrangement free from electronics. The tape sits on the border between shaabi and rural music, adorned by Salmo's flexible voice and immersive singing. A son of Qirun village in the Masyaf area of Hama province, Mohammad Salmo has been present in the Syrian shaabi scene since the mid-1980s, and performed extensively at weddings and concerts in central Syria until his death a few years ago. He was one of the few Syrian shaabi artists who held onto the oud and acoustic arrangements, as the appearance of keyboard in his music was rare.
