More Info

This tape reflects the diversity of Qamishli city, as Hussein Al Hasan sings in a dialect and style faithful to Arabic Jazrawi music, while being accompanied on buzuq and keyboards by musicians who are likely Kurdish, as suggested by their names and playing styles. This Arab-Kurdish mix characterized wedding celebrations in the Jazira region during the nineties, when a number of Arab singers began to emerge after a decade of Kurdish dominance, while Kurdish musicians maintained their authority in instrumental playing. A native of Qamishli, Hussein Al Hasan was active in the Syrian shaabi scene in the Syrian Jazira region during the nineties, when he became one of the region's most prominent singers of that era alongside names like Omar Suleiman and Ahmad Al Abd, before gradually from the scene by the mid-2000s, it becomes difficult to find any recordings of his after 2007.
