More Info

This tape documents a 1992 concert in Abu Dhabi by Deir Ez Zor's most famous shaabi singer ever, Thiab Mashhour. Thiab is accompanied by an oriental takht ensemble that shades his melodious voice and reflects its echo, as he moves from one song to another, taking the audience with him on journeys to independent aesthetic and emotional worlds. Born in Deir Ez Zor in 1946, Thiab Mashhour is considered the most prominent shaabi singer from Deir Ez Zor specifically and the Jazira and Euphrates region generally. With him, Jazira music traveled to the rest of Syria and then the Arab world, two decades before the emergence of the first generation of contemporary Jazrawi shaabi music stars in the nineties. Syrians knew him from stages and iconic television series such as Sah Al Nom. He retired from singing in 2004, was honored at a ceremony in Damascus in 2018, and left us in 2022.
