More Info

Here we listen to a rough-sounding live recording of a wedding party in the village of Al Ghariya Al Sharqiya in rural Daraa, performed by singers Mohammed Yacoub Houshan and Mohammed Assaf, in collaboration with poet and mijwiz player Khalil Houshan. The trio uses only the mijwiz as the sole instrument for arrangement, in a way that establishes the traditional and non-commercial character of Hourani music, which is considered one of the least commodified and commercialized shaabi music sub-genres in Syria. While we don't know much about the singers of the concert, the internet preserves some information about the poet and musician Khalil Houshan, who resides today between southern Syria and Jordan, where he forms a duo with his son Khaled who shares the stage with him at the concerts and celebrations they perform from Syria to the UAE.
