More Info

We listen here to a studio album from the early professional career of Saria Al Sawas, beginning with a masterful performance of the traditional classic Goumi Tanedbok, before moving on to perform a series of songs that appear to be written and composed especially for her, ranging from Syrian shaabi to pop music with folklore leanings. Born in Homs in 1981, Saria Al Sawas is considered the first lady of Syrian shaabi music, and one of the most successful contemporary Syrian singers. She began singing at school events at the age of six, before later entering the shaabi scene and releasing a number of classics such as Bas Ismaa Minni (Just Listen to Me) and Wein El Bareh Sahrana (Where Have You Been Last Night?) with her wild voice and iconic singing style, until it was impossible to avoid hearing her songs several times a day during any tour in Syria in the mid-2000s. Saria remains strongly present to this day, developing her ongoing legacy that is difficult to compare to any peer.
