More Info
Aleppo-born Abdel Rahman Jabakji (1931-2003) was a master of the oud and a key figure in the preservation of Arab musical heritage. His passion for music emerged at the age of six, and by 1952, he had joined Aleppo Radio as an oud player. Jabakji's career spanned teaching music, performing at major festivals, and composing for prominent singers like Mohammed Khairi and Karem Mahmoud. He also held significant roles, including artistic supervisor at Damascus’s military theater, while recording extensively for radio stations in Damascus, London, and Monte Carlo. In 1970, Jabakji founded the House of Musical Heritage in Aleppo to safeguard the city’s rich musical traditions. An accomplished composer, researcher, and author, he published instructional books on oud playing and collections of famous works by Our Kalthoum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, and Farid Al Atrache. His contributions to musicology were showcased at the 1992 Cairo Conference on Arab Music, and he established the Arab Music Heritage Band, leaving a lasting legacy.
