Mahrous Al Shegri was born in the city of Douma in rural Damascus in 1958. He worked in construction when he was young and was known for his distinctive voice. He was also a muezzin in one of the mosques of Douma. In the later stages of his life, he moved from singing in private circles and among friends to singing at weddings and parties in the city of Douma, and then in the eastern and western Ghouta and the city of Damascus. In 2011 he left Douma after the escalation of the conflict there, to return to it in 2018 and settle there. Today, Al Shegri is a member of the Douma municipal council.
