More Info
On every occasion, attaba singer Barhoum Rizk mentions the poet Mousa Francis, who used to write the verses of attaba for Rizk when he did not write it himself. He remembers him thankfully as he believes that the secret of the resilience of the attaba as a musical genre, and its spread and success lies in the word. Attaba is, in its origin, a form of poetry, and skill in formulating meanings, images and vocabulary is the only thing that can engage the listener for long hours in each session. Especially since the music itself that accompanies the attaba is simple and minimalist. In the past it was often sufficient to accompany it with one oud or a single buzuq, especially in the period that preceded the spread of the keyboard in the local scene.
