More Info

Suleiman Al Shaar was born in Fajleet village, near the coastal Syrian city Tartous. His name has been associated with attaba since his beginnings in the early 1990s. In 1992, Bassam Zeidan, owner of Al-Arz recordings in the city of Homs, recorded and produced a full session of attaba music by Al-Shaar at his home studio. This tape was largely responsible for Al Shaar’s initial fame and popularity at the time. Across the many years of his career, Al Shaar has continued to perform at weddings and public occasions throughout Syria. He has also recorded numerous albums, relying on the traditional melodic templates of attaba and folk dabke. He has collaborated with a number of local attaba poets such as Talib Shahoud and Riad Al-Ahmad.
